The term cerebral palsy refers to a group of neurological disorders that are characterized by spastic body movement and poor coordination and muscle control. The symptoms of cerebral palsy, which usually appear by age three, are caused by damage to the areas of the brain that control motor function.
One of the biggest obstacles faced by parents of children with cerebral palsy is the expensive medical care associated with the condition. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke estimates that the average lifetime cost for someone with cerebral palsy is $921,000. This amount does not include out-of-pocket expenses for such things as:

Erb's palsy is a condition in which a newborn baby suffers full or partial paralysis of the upper arm. Infants with Erb's palsy often have a limp, paralyzed arm that angles inward toward the body. This disorder can be caused by a birthing complication known as shoulder dystocia, in which the shoulder becomes impacted in the birth canal during the delivery process. Excessive pressure placed upon the shoulder can damage the underlying nerves that control movement of the neck, shoulders, and arms.
Erb's palsy is more likely to occur when there are complications with the birthing process – such as a breech delivery or extended labor – or when the doctor is forced to deliver the baby quickly and must employ force to remove the baby from the birth canal. It is estimated that one or two newborns out of every 1,000 develop this condition.
While most cases of Erb's palsy resolve on their own or after a few months of physical therapy, others are more serious and may require one or more surgeries. At Warshauer Poe & Thornton, P.C.,our Erb's palsy attorneys understand the unique hardships that Erb's palsy can inflict on a family.
